xxxxxxBefore designing any chair, the designer needs to examine how their designs will affect their audience in a variety of ways. The power of a design can influence whole societies and time is a true measure of the power of design. A classic example of the influence of design is the Volkswagen Beetle. It symbolized an era of practical transportation that stretched from the 1940’s until its last car rolled off the assembly line in Mexico in 2003. Designers have a responsibility to create dependable products that are economically suitable that may help improve our way of life. Examine the roles of the designer, the consumer and the boss of the company and type a one page summary or prepare a flowchart of how each individual group can effect the social and economic impact of our society.

The Designer

xxxxxThe role of the designer can have a multitude of influences over various individuals. Vast fortunes have been accumulated because of the consumer’s desire to own designer goods. From clothes to eyewear to furniture, people have had the desire to purchase and own various designer products. The designer main responsibility is to create a new and exciting design that will create a unique look or feel that gives the product a sense of identity.

The Consumer

xxxxxThe consumer is the one who purchases the designer’s work. If a style is popular the demand for the product rises and the consumer may have to pay a higher price for the product or may not be able to attain it all. The interest of the consumer can dictate the demand and the price of a product. All too often this happens in the Holiday shopping season as consumers demand popular toy products which often results in short supplies. Designers must also take into consideration what the consumers wants and try to incorporate their demands into their latest design.

The Boss/Owner

xxxxxThe boss or owner is in business to stay in business and make a profit. He or she needs to encourage the designer to create designs that will help make a profit for his or her company. The boss/owner is also ultimately responsible for the production of safe products. If a designer creates a design that is ultimately unsafe but very trendy what is their ethical responsibility in determining weather or not that product should be produced. Does the owner or boss risk profit over safety concerns. What is the boss or owner’s ethical responsibilities to the consumer when developing new products.
