Design Brief:

xxxxxYou are a furniture designer trying to establish your style and name. You are looking to develop that one piece of furniture that sets you apart from the others. So you decide to set out and design a seat that is unique and different from any thing that you may have come across in the past. This is going to be your trademark piece of furniture. So let's beginning on developing a design,

Step 1

xxxxxSketch you ideas down on piece of paper. Try to get as many ideas as you can on paper these ideas are known as thumbnail sketches. Don't worry about the quality of the drawings just get the idea from your head on the paper.

Step 2

xxxxxEnvision your design and see if it works. Make a three dimension model of project but use inexpensive material such as cardboard or paper to see it works. Here you can revisions at the model stage. Your model can be either full size or to scale. The idea of the model is to get the concept from paper to reality.

xxxxxOnce you've decide upon what your design is going to be the next step is develop a working drawing of object. The working drawing also known as the orthographic drawing can show up to six different views of your project. The most common views that are drawn are usually the top, front and right side. These views can determine the height, width and length of the object.

Step 3

xxxxxBefore the start of construction project you need to make a list of the materials you are going to be using. This will help eliminate any confusion help you get organized. The Bill of Materials contains the materials, part names, size and what type of material are needed. This helps determine the cost of the project by calculating the total amount of board feet that will be used.

Step 4

xxxxxOnce you have figure out what you are going to build and what you are going to need the next step is to select the materials. Material selection is an important in apply the Elements of Design. The wrong type of material can make or break a project. Think of fine crafted project that uses sub par material. What will the casual observer say when they observe the work. Material selection is only of the important parts in applying design principles

Step 5

xxxxxThe final step in the applying the Elements of Design is actually constructing your design piece. The fundamentals of good design is having sound construction methods. If this is going to be your signature piece then it must be durable. The selection of joinery is important so that your masterpiece will hold together for future generations.
