Calculating Board Feet

A board foot is a unit of measure, equal to 1 inch thick board, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long. Generally, stock less than one inch in thickness but more than a 1/2 inch is calculated as 1 inch thick. For example a board that is 3/4 of an inch thick is calculated as a 1 inch thick board.

There are difeerent formulas that can be used to calulate board feet. One formula uses all inches the other uses inches and feet.

Example #1

Board feet = T ( thichkness) x W (width) x L(length) all inches

144 square inches

 

A board foot equals the products Number pf square inches in one square foot.

Example #2

If your are using inches and feet in the same formula :

Board Feet = Thickness (inches) x Width ( inches ) x Length ( Feet)
