Design Principles

you are going to be a chair maker, you will need to apply
some of your newly gained skills as a designer. Every
day we live with products that convey the elements of good design.
From our daily transportation needs to household products, consumers
demand that products function properly and are pleasing to the eye.
Well designed products are not just mere coincident they follow
a set of so called guidelines. The fundamentals of any good design
include purpose or function, appearance, materials and sound construction
methods . The elements are the components which can aid any visual
design or work of art. They are the structure of the work and can
carry a wide variety of messages.
The Elements of Designs
Point:

One mark on a blank page that the brain seeks out and tries
to define.
One point can just be a dot. Three points can be arranged to be
a triangle.

Lines:

Lines can be used to give an object a certain feel.
It
can be either smooth or continuous or very rigid.
Form:
The outline that shapes
a project

Shape:
Lines,
when connected together form an objects outline.
This is
know as shape.

For example,
fluid takes the shape of the container that supports it.
Space:
Space
is how much area an object occupies.
How much
space does the bench take in the room?
Movement:
The relationship of how an object conveys motion.


Do the
lines flow or do they stop?
Colors
All colors are hues and blends of primary and secondary colors

What are the three primary colors?
What are the three secondary colors?
Pattern
The arrangement of materials in a repeating order.

Texture
The way the surface feels to the touch

Proportions
The relationship of the objects parts to its total size.

Balance
When an object appears to be at rest or stable.

Harmony
When an object's parts all "get along" with the other parts.

Rhythm
The occurrences of certain distinctive features

Emphasis
Focusing attention on one point of attraction
